Elika Ostrov is a Russian-Estonian musician based in Berlin. In the DIY process of making, language tied with vocals plays the initiator for the esoteric sound montage. Ostrov often uses her voice and field recordings to evoke certain sounds. The process of music-making emerges as a form of sound mediumship, where her body becomes the vessel, and the act itself takes on the nature of an exorcism. Her work is defined by a multi-faceted persona, where cosmic entities, though invisible, exist as forces that speak. Her sound draws from the tones of horror cinema, parasomnia, and incantations. In her soundscapes, religion becomes a secular backdrop, intertwined with the pagan influences of her upbringing.
Her minimal electronic setup includes a microKORG and a Microphonic Soundbox (LeafAudio)—both known for their versatility. Ostrov is drawn to the concept of "gentle violence" in sound, a delicate balance achieved by manipulating frequency and noise. She navigates the edge between soft and sharp to transform the act of listening into a visceral experience. Beginning with drums as her first instrument and extending to guitar, flutes, violins, and pianos, she treats instruments—and non-instruments like kettles, tractors, and snow—as extensions of her body.
Her debut album "Confessions Of An Imposter" (2022) was released on an Irish cassette label, Fort Evil Fruit, and has been described as ''a remnant of some nighttime fantasy or lingering terror" (Beats Per Minute). The filmmaker and Ostrov's partner, Rouzbeh Rashidi, produced the album, the album cover, and the music video for the track "Forgiven." It received airplay on NTS Radio, RTE Radio, Dublin Digital Radio, Scolopendre, and CAMP Radio, and was mentioned in the 2022 Boomkat Charts.
